Jana + Alex | Engagement

Jana, Alex and I spent Sunday afternoon at the Ballard Locks and Golden Gardens. We were hoping for a bit of sun, but their fun laid back personalities more than made up for the clouds. They have great chemistry, so images came naturally. I know their wedding next June will be a lot of fun!

We spent a great Saturday afternoon at the University of Puget Sound and then headed down to the water for sunset. I'm looking forward to their wedding next summer!

We also spent a bit of time with some great models. It was pretty funny at times with 25+ photographers trying to photograph one person.

Planning a wedding is all about the details. And there are so many! The invitations, favors, cake, flowers, table settings, dress, food and countless other things. All of these things make great photographs that show how beautiful your wedding looked! It's great to have colorful and fun photographs of all of those things that you put so much work into choosing! But so often the human details are overlooked. It's those little moments and gestures that can be so telling about what you wedding felt like! Great photography does more than show what something looked like, it shows what something FELT like. I just love this photograph of a bride and her closest friend in prayer just minutes be for she is married. Sometimes, the little things can say volumes!

Seattle Wedding Industry Professionals

Exciting news! I'm now a member of the Seattle Wedding Industry Professionals. We're a small group of wedding professionals, sharing a really cool boutique meeting space and gallery in Green Lake. The great idea came from Cheryl Jones and Sacha Blue, who also happen to be great photographers!

The space is very cozy and features quite a few amenities including a projector where I will be screening images for clients! It's also a great one stop shop to find many of the vendors you will need for planning the perfect Seattle wedding!

The group is still looking for a few more members, particularly florists, wedding planners, make up artists and other types of wedding professionals. Contact Cheryl through SWIP's site to fill out an application!

I spent a couple of fun hours with Holly and Clay shooting photos for their engagement session recently. We shot in Freeway Park and a few other locations around the downtown area. Freeway Park is just loaded with cool places to shoot. I'm looking forward to checking it out this spring when the flowers are up. Clay and Holly were super easy and a lot of fun to photograph. I'm looking forward to their wedding in Issaquah in just few weeks!

Bellevue Wedding Expo

I had a great weekend at the Bellvue Wedding Expo over the past few days. So many really cool people came by. I look forward to photographing their weddings!

I made this image during a wedding at the stunning Russian Orthodox Cathedral of St Nicholas in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle. I think this church is my favorite ceremony location yet. It is absolutely stunning. Stained glass windows fill the small, ornate hall with light. I made this frame as Wafik and Nadia walked back down the isle after exchanging vows. Bits of sunlight illuminated them making it possible to capture the feel of the church.

For Wafik and Nadia, the ceremony lasted well over an hour. Many brides these days opt for very short ceremony, sometimes less than 5 minutes. But from a photographers point of view, I love long ceremonies. With a long ceremony I have plenty of time to move around and find fun and compelling ways to capture moments. Also, there is more time capture interaction and emotion. Anything less than 15 minuets really limits how the ceremony can be shot.

I just came across this image from Kayala & Tim's wedding near Seattle last summer. Kayla forgot her garter until right before the ceremony. A bridesmaid rushed back to get it and Tim gave a helping hand. Candid details like this add so much more texture to the images from each wedding. At the time it was a seemingly inconsequential moment. But years later this image will bring back memories form a small part of the day that Kayla & Tim might have forgotten.

New Wedding Albums

I just got these killer wedding albums in! The first is a Fine Art album, and the matte pages feel silky and smooth. Images just fly off of the bright white pages and I really like the lack of gutter between the two pages. It's perfect for designing full spreads! To me, design is about letting the images communicate clearly. I put a lot of time into editing and choosing what images work best with each other to tell a compelling and truthful story. The end result is stunning, simple and timeless.

The second type of album is a Flush Mount. This is a two tone Japanese book with a cloth cover. The texture of the fabric feels great, and the pages are just a little thicker than the Fine Art Album. Choosing the right album for each wedding is a lot of fun. Rose and Ben's Whistler, BC wedding had a down to earth and friendly vibe. This album really matches with their personalities.

Into the Dark

When the fog creeps into Seattle and dusk is here at 3:30 pm, I can't help but think of sunlight. Those early summer days of seeming perpetual daylight seem so far away. I shot this image a few months back looking out over the bay. It hasn't been altered on photoshop, this is what it looked like. I just love the contrast from gold to blue and dark to light.

Annie Leibovitz

World-renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz will be speaking in Seattle on the 19th of November. If you are one of the very few people who does not know who she is, she shot many many iconic images of celebrities for Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair. She has numerous books and is regarded as an expert in portrait photography. One of her best known images is of John Lennon naked with Yoko Ono. She will be speaking about photography Wednesday. If you're able to find tickets, I'm sure it will be a great experience!

I drove down from Seattle to photograph Sheena and Kenny's wedding in Mt. Shasta California. The ceremony and reception were at the beautiful Mt. Shasta Resort. Of course, it was a warm sunny day. Sheena and Kenny are from Portland, and they definitely like to have a good time. Such a fun crowd and great location made for stunning images.

After getting ready for their wedding at Morgan Hill Retreat, a beautiful little bed and breakfast tucked away in the hills, Gina and Alex headed down to Kiana Lodge. Rain forced the ceremony to be moved inside, but the location was still stunning. They were true to Alex's Russian heritage and followed dinner with a vodka toast. Congratulations guys!

Eric and Jodi are a super sweet couple. They've been together for about a year and look like they can't get enough of each other. I spent several hours photographing them in Fremont, then at Gasworks Park. We found some killer light. It was a lot of fun working with a couple so laid back. It fits well with my style of letting my subjects be themselves.

Wow, it was hard to pick just a few wedding photographs to blog. Jeff and Jessica had a gorgeous wedding ceremony at Blessed Sacrament Church. What an amazing church! Beautiful light, beautiful subjects!

Rose & Ben | Brew Creek Lodge | Whistler, BC

Rose and Ben got away from Seattle for a fun, laid-back wedding at the Brew Creek Lodge in British Columbia. I spent the weekend with them and 60 of their closest friends and family.

First off, the venue is perfect. The Brew Creek is small group of cabins and lodges tucked away in the woods about 20 minutes from Whistler Village. It felt so private, could have been in Alaska.

Rose and Ben danced late into the night, and combination of fun people with a great location made for killer images.

Most of the guests spent the weekend at the lodge enjoying the great weather and good company.

What are your memories worth?

How much do you charge? That questions seem to be the first that many brides ask.

On a recent evening, a couple of Seattle wedding photographers and I talked over beers. The question came up about how many brides chose their wedding photographer based on price. Many brides seem to put price high on the list, while quality seems to be a lower priority.

Most photographers have heard horror stories from brides who went with a cheap photographer and the results were less than spectacular. The question is, what would they pay to bring back the moments that their cheap photographer missed? $5,000? $10,000?

What would their children or grandchildren pay to see great images from their wedding? What is the value of having true art for their home?

I’ve dedicated the past 8 years of my life to making the most compelling photojournalism possible. I studied under former Directors of Photography for the National Geographic at a top school for photojournalism. I fought to work as a photographer in the highly competive newspaper industry. Every day, I try to make better images than the day before. I try to make images better than any other photographer has made.

I do this because I think photography has tremendous value and importance. What else at your wedding is more important than great photography?

Annie Griffiths Belt

If you like good stories, Annie Griffiths Belt has enough to go around. You can hear her words and see her stunning images on a great new slide show by her and National Geographic. Annie talks about how she she captured many of her photographs from all over the world. If you read the magazine, you will recognize many pictures. Annie is an amazing photographer and is extremely humble. It does take a couple of minutes to load, but it's well worth your time!

In 1986-87 Annie was a visiting professor at my old school Ohio University. She also worked with my great uncle, George F. Mobley, a staff photographer for 33 years at National Geographic.

How important is a good camera?

"That camera is huge! It must take great pictures!" Most professional photographers have heard those words more times than they can count. As a photojournalist, I may have a little different opinion of gear than many photographers. To me, a camera is a tool used to visually tell stories. It would be like asking a writer, "Gee, you write great stories, what type of pen do you use?"

Don't get me wrong, with new pro digital cameras, a whole new world has been made available to those who understand cameras. I am able to photograph candid moments in low light like never before. But gear is just gear. As my professors in photojournalism school used to remind me, the photographer is the one who takes pictures. The camera is only the means.

A good camera can help in some situations, but it is each persons unique ability to see and connect with their subjects that allows them to make the most meaningful images. I am reminded of a story about 2004 Magazine Photographer of the Year Alex Majoli.

You have more than likely seen some of Alex's images in national magazines like Newsweek. He often photographs wars and poverty. Alex uses a point and shoot digital camera because it helps him to stay focused on what is most important, the content of his images.

I made this photograph of this dashing young lad at a recent Seattle wedding. Weddings can be a great place to make killer images of children. One of my favorite things about shooting weddings is that there is just so much to photograph. All you have to do is let people be themselves and great moments seem to happen all around.

For all of the photography fans out there make sure you check out APAD on a regular basis. It's a great site founded by photojournalist Melissa Lyttle. It showcases a new image every day. Many of the members are newspaper and magazine photojournalists. There are a lot of great photos that make you look twice.

Brandi And Clinton's Wedding at the Willows Lodge

The first wedding photography of the year, and what a great way to start things off! Brandi and Clinton were so much fun to photograph. They definitely know how to have a good time. After the Willows Lodge in Woodinville closed at 11:30 pm, they and their 22 groomsmen and bridesmaids were off to the bar.

The combination of fun people and a great location made for some artistic, really cool images.

I know the Super Bowl doesn't have much to do with wedding photojournalism, but hey, it's Wednesday and this is a really cool little segment on what it's like as a photographer covering the game. It's by the photo agency, Reuters. You most likely see Reuters photos every day. You're going to need fast internet to check it out, but it's worth the time. Especially if you like football!

News Wedding Photographers

If you haven't checked out News Wedding Photographers, it's a fast growing resource for finding real photojournalists. It's the only wedding photography organization that requires all of its members to have worked as actual photojournalists for news papers.

To a transplant from California, Seattle's weather can seem a little dreary this time of year. But when I start to see too much gray, I remember that rain can fall a little harder in other parts of the world. During a 5 week photojournalism field school in Scotland, it rained for 4 weeks! But I guess that's why the Scots have a drinking problem...just kidding!

Tacoma and Bellevue Wedding Shows

After two busy weekends, the wedding shows in Tacoma and Bellevue are over. They ended up being a lot of fun. I met a lot of great people. It's so interesting to hear about how couples met and to get to know so many different personalities.

There were a few couples who really knew photography. Their questions were great, and It was nice to just talk about photography. After all, I am a photographer because I love photos!

I had the good fortune of being right across from some great vendors at both shows. In Bellevue, I was just across from Zarah Loves Food. They had a chilled fire and ice soup that was top notch.

Booking the right photographer

In every bride's quest to find the perfect wedding photographer, the
subject of price is unavoidable. Of course you want to find a great
photographer, cheap! But realistically, it won't happen. Trust me,
this is a lesson you don't want to learn the hard way! The more you
learn about photography, the more you realize you get what you pay
for. There is no way to cut corners and still get great photography.

If your budget really is tight, you might prioritize. Try thinking
about what from your wedding day will really last?

It comes down to memories and images. A real photojournalist will
deliver on both. You will be able to live in the moment on your
wedding day. You won't have to spend hours posing for pictures when
you would rather be living your day!

But most importantly, a real photojournalist will capture all of the
moments that naturally happen when you are able to be in the moment,
living your day! Great memories and great images. I don't think it
can get any better than that!

Take a lesson from Ashley. I photographed her for a newspaper story
in California. Ashley and her friends got together for a giant car
wash to raise money for her wedding! I know this idea is not for
everyone, but there are ways. Be creative, talk with me about it, we
can find a way!

Home Is Seattle

After a week of apartment hunting, Elise and I found a great place in Lower Queen Anne. It's on a quiet street in a historic building, just a few blocks from Kerry Park. I had to take my turn as a tourist, taking cliche photos of Seattle. Right as I was making this frame, a couple walked into the picture and embraced, adding one more element.

Seattle seems very laid-back, and everyone I've meet seems very genuine. It's quite a refreshing change coming from California.

I'm meeting with some talented local photographers this week, and I'm excited to hear their thoughts about photography in Seattle.

What struck me most about Zack and Heather was how happy, young and care free they are. Neither of them seemed to be able to be serious. While they were waiting for the ceremony, Zack colored a drawing of a Kangaroo for Heather. They made great subjects, and ther wedding was a lot of fun to photograph.
